About Commerce

Commerce offices in Oklahoma CityThe Oklahoma Department of Commerce is the primary economic development entity in the state.  Our mission is to increase the quantity and the quality of jobs in Oklahoma.  We do that through the following means:

  • Business Attraction, Creation and Retention -- Our business team recruits new businesses to the state by promoting the great assets we have for businesses to succeed; fosters an entrepreneurial culture and infrastructure in Oklahoma to encourage the start-up of new businesses; and partners with communities to ensure existing businesses grow and prosper.
  • Community Development -- Our community development and Oklahoma Main Street teams work with city and county elected officials and community leaders to help raise the per capita income, improve the quality of life for local residents, and help local businesses to thrive. Through federal funding, we address vital infrastructure and human development that help position favorably for business attraction.
  • Knowledge-Based Industry Development -- Knowledge-based economies create high-paying jobs.  So Commerce works with education, industry and communities to foster and grow knowledge-based industries, such as biosciences, engineering, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, renewable energy, and information technology, in Oklahoma to ensure quality jobs today and in the future.
  • Workforce Development, Recruitment and Retention -- As Commerce works to increase the quantity of jobs, it must ensure a skilled pipeline of workers to fill those jobs. We do this by bringing together industry and education to ensure the skills that are needed are those being taught. Further, we reach out to people with Oklahoma ties to recruit them back to the state to fill critical knowledge-worker positions in engineering, healthcare, accounting, and other occupations.
